New to steering, controls, cables, etc.

If everything pans out (doesn't require too much money to get boat and motor operational) I will need to be looking for some sort of steering, controls, shift and throttle cables, etc. My problem is I've always had tillers and the remotes are all foreign to me. The controls (throttle and shift) seem pretty straight forward to me but the steering has me baffled. There was a 2-pulley assembly hanging from the front of the motor and that's all there was. Do I want that type of steering installed again? What are my options and what should I expect to pay for new/used (should I buy used stuff)? Where can i find installation manuals for these items online?

If there's an area this subject has already been covered I couldn't fine it. Directions to it would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

I'm new to it too, and I was intimidated by the steering as well, until I went to look at some new boats. When I saw the steering cable installed, it all made sense for me. I would recommend you do that, too. I'm still intimidated by the trottle and ignition controls, but at least I know now that the steering will be a piece of cake.

I'm still lacking a motor so I don't have mine installed yet, or else I would take some good pictures for you. It's really hard to explain, so hopefully someone else here can get some good pictures for you.

I'm doing the same thing w/ my '70 14 ft tri-hull. I had the cable and LEVER steering. Now THAT'S a bear to get the hang of.
Anyway, I was able to get steering cable, wheel, connection plates, controls w/cables, wiring harness, etc. for ~$50 at a U-pull-it boat graveyard. Better than some I've seen at the used parts shop for much more.
The toughest part I'm looking at is making the console and the bracket to bolt the back end to, which I'll likely do w/ fiberglass.

That cable, & pulley steering system has been used for ages in small boats, there's really nothing wrong with the design, or concept, and it works well for what it is. Once you understand the workings of it, you'll see how simple, & effective it is. The worst that usually happens with these, is the cable wears out, or breaks, a simple, & cheap fix, But, you must replace it with a good cable of the same quality, or it won't hold up well. The cable installation instructions are listed right here on this forum, you just gotta look. I personally would stick with that system on your size boat. Your next alternative, which can get pricey, is a single sealed cable rack, & pinion system. Then there are fancier, better systems out there, it all depends on how much you want to spend, or invest in the boat.

you did not state the hp of the motor. what are you going to use the boat for? you will need pre 1979 shift and throttle control cables. you have 3 options on steering, pulley cable, rack and pinion, or rotary, i prefer rotary, user friendly, and easier to install. here are some pics of the pulley cable system on a 93 40 hp, the other is a rotary system on a 58 15 hp.

Re: New to steering, controls, cables, etc.

Thank you all for such great information, advice, and pictures. The replies seem to have covered everything except my personal, fine details of which I don't even know yet.

I edited my post with the hp of my motor and as for Tashasdaddy's inquiry as to what I"ll be using the boat for: 95% saltwater (intra coastal and gulf) fishing. Snook, Redfish, Sharks, Cobia, etc. I am the world's worst fisherman but am also living proof that if you get your line wet long enough and enough times, you'll get a monster every once in a while. My 8 year-old daughter catches the pinfish and grunts for me to use for bait.

Here is a map and pic of my stomping ground (SW area of Pinellas county).

Re: New to steering, controls, cables, etc.

I spent many a young boy Christmas at my grandparents place on Boca Ciega Island! My grandparents are now long gone, and the Boca Ciega place is no longer in the family, but my wife and I try to get to St. Pete area at least once every other year or so.

Someone posted a nicely done diagram on cable/drum style steering some time back. A search of the forums may turn it up.
