90 weight gear oil.

you'll need a small hand pump to fill from drain hole in bottom until it comes out vent hole on top, do not fill from top hole!

My SX outdrive is supposed to have 75W-90 Synthetic. You can download an owners manual from Volvo Penta for yours to see what it calls for.

Shortly thereafter you will be buying a new outdrive, a oil pump to fill it from the bottom and your wallet will be a lot lighter.

there are small passageways between upper and lower, oil can't flow downward properly, never makes it to lower, pressure from pumping from lower to upper means if you see oil coming out of top vent hole...passages must be full.

Buy the hand pump at NAPA for a couple bucks and re fill the drive as mentioned by others. Keep the pump for future use,

Gear oil usually has a bad smell, although I don't mind the Quicksiler Hi Perf green stuff.

I filled mine from the bottome without a pump. It wasn't too bad with a helper. You just have to squeeze the jug and collapse it as best you can as you fill the drive. You have to keep topping off the jug because you can't get the last third of the jug to empty out.

Mine needed like 71 ounces to I had to use some out the third quart which made it somewhat easy to do.

Oh, and make sure you have someone to open and close the vent plug when swapping jugs or a lot of the fluid will drain out.

A DIY pump is less than $20. You will save that in cleaning materials and unspilled lube in 1 or 2 uses. Just get a pump, they have a threaded fitting that fits the bottom hole on the drive so very little gets spilled.

Just get the pump can be had at any marine store for around 10-20 bucks depending on which one you want. They screw right onto the bottle of lube and screw into fill hole, very easy and a must have. I would NOT be willing to roll the dice and try to do it from the top vent hole, just not worth the risk imo. Get the right equip and the right lube for your OD and learn how to do it then you will know from here on out and can save yourself a bunch of money in the future.

I didn't know you could get a pump until I found this thread. My local guy told me to get a weed pump when I asked them for one. I found this one below (as well as a few others)

http://www.wholesalemarine.com/p/SIE-18-9781/Lower+Unit+Gear+Lube+Pump.html

but it's the right price. There are also electric ones available but they seem overkill for something that doesn't need to be done all that regularly.

Walmart has them along with the Quicksilver 90w oil you need. The pump cost just a few dollars and you can use it again next season. The right tool for the right job. Regards

For the Volvo it needs to be a GL5 75W-90 oil. Mobil 1 would be fine to use.
