I recently aquired a boat from my dad with a 1987 v4 110 hp It has not been run in 3 years and was not winterized. I brought it to IL from FL and it has been in my garage all winter. I have never had a boat until now and I have learned a ton since reading on this site. I have not been able to get it to turn over. Dad bought the engine as a factory rebuild and has less than 50hours on it. The ignition has no key dad just used anything he could find and said it worked fine. Also replaced the bilge pump due to salt water and the new pump isn't working. Not sure if I have more than one problem or all related. I am getting the service manual asap but should I attempt to work on this or have it looked at by a local. I don't want to screw up this motor as I have read it is a good motor and the weather is getting better here in IL and I don't want to spend all summer on land. Thanks for the education, I would be shipwrecked without it!

Re: NEW TOY

Pull the plugs, dump some (any penetrating...PB Blaster will do) oil in the cylinders (make sure tilted as close to vertical as possible), let it sit for a week, and during that time, put a socket and wrench on the flywheel nut and do your best to break it loose. Then post what happens. One thing at a time.

Re: NEW TOY

Welcome MRFIXIT!

It will not turn over...meaning it won't crank with the key switch or the engine is froze up? If the engine is froze up, follow Scatty's advice.

If it will not crank with the starter, wait for the service manual so you can get a handle on the wiring. In the mean time, make sure you the battery is good and take a screw driver and cross the large posts on the starter solenoid. If it does crank, probably a wiring problem from the key switch or the key switch is bad. Also check the battery connectons from the battery to the starter. Make sure they are clean and tight...including the ground wire.

Also, check the link below. It's a link to the FAQ section and a thread called Awakenin a sleeping outboard. Read it. It will give you direction and what to do before trying to start the engine.

Re: NEW TOY

you said it's been in salt water, and been sitting for 3 years. clean every electrical connection you can get your hands on. take them apart 1 at a time and clean. the salt atmosphere cause corrosion. take it from a Florida boater. battery cables both ends, engine and battery.. check for any knicks, cracks, swelling, they corrode from the inside out. change the impeller before running very long. don't burn it up.

NEW TOY-UPDATE

PROGRESS-ON MY 87 JOHNSON 110HP. I CHECKED FLYWHEEL NO PROBLEMS. CROSSED SOLENOID AS DIRECTED AND IT TURNED THE FLYWHEEL. IT IS GREAT FEELING SINCE I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET ANYTHING TO WORK BESIDES THE TILT MOTOR. I DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO WORK ON IT SO I JUST CHECKED TO SEE IF IT WOULD TURN. I WILL WAIT FOR THE MANUAL TO REPLACE THE IGNITION AND SINCE THE BOAT IS FROM FLORIDA I WILL BE REPLACING THE IMPELLER AS SOON AS I CAN GET IT RUNNING. THANKS FOR THE HELP. ANY OTHER PROBLEMS I HAVE I'M SURE GOING TO LET YA KNOW. THANKS AGAIN! HOPE TO HERE FROM YA AGAIN IN ONE OF THE OTHER FORUMS NOT RELATED TO REPAIRS!
