I will no longer have to drive over 40 miles to go to Wally World. Our county's first Walmart opened today. It is a mini super center (about 1/2 the size of a normal Walmart and is supposed to have hitching post parking for the Amish. Now I only have to drive 12 miles. I will check it out shortly.

I like and dislike Wal Mart.

I think they have a place for low prices, etc..

However, I have drifted away from them for several reasons-Why?

1. Service. Grocery. The deli people are in CONSTANT-SLO MO. Check out lines are ridiculous.

2. Quality of goods. Vegetables, fruits are second-at best. I frequent a local veggie store.

Those issues WILL bite them.

RubberFrog, All we have are specialty shops around here, I have to drive 45 miles to buy socks or underwear. Also I live in a very depressed area and our Ames store shut down about 10 years ago. Any dept. store is welcome in my book.
Most of our manufacturing jobs are already gone! The paper mills,Ethan Allen furniture mill, the cable plant, the AMF bowling pin factory restructured and cut everyones wages to peanuts. The only one left is the Otis gun cleaning kit factory and the Kraft cream cheese plant and thats not looking very good. Where do you suggest I buy my stuff and what do I use to pay for it with? All my money is going for fuel. I don't like the cheap crap any better then you but I have been disabled for almost 10 years now and the $$$$ are pretty tight. That Walmart will be one of our biggest employers and that will be a good thing. Guess what kind of gun cleaning kit I use! Otis.

Aside from household cleaning items, I rarely go into WallyWorld anymore.

I'm trying to avoid supporting the Chinese and their cheap garbage.

I also have friends that work there... and the stories they tell on how they treat their employees...

H.

Well, I buy my Remington, Federal and Winchester made in the USA ammo at Walmart, even though I could spend a lot more on the same stuff elsewhere ;) I don't know anyone that grocery shops there. OMC go ahead and enjoy that new store :)

Even at W-Mart, I look for American labels. Those, I buy.

Sam Walton used to pride himself in his American offerings. I guess the nut does fall far from the tree.

I buy and will continue to buy much of my food and cooking supply's at the local shops. I buy my shoes, jackets, boots and such at the local farmers co-op. I also buy local milk and ice cream so I do my part. Now if you will excuse me I am heading to Walmarts.

I understand where you are coming from OMC.......My beef comes from the fact that around me there are TOO MANY Wal Marts. Within a 15 min drive of me there are 2 Super Wal-Marts.....not to mention of few other regular ones. Soon to be a 3rd one as the local Wal- Mart wants to become a Super Wal-Mart............and the village is letting them, even though they throw a fit if any other businesss wants to expand.

They have good prices, and I do buy some things there.....for example D.i.c.k.ies workpants of a certain style that they dont sell at the local Fleet farm (hardware sporting goods tool store)......but for the most part I personaly stay away.

Let's let Wal Mart decide if there are "too many".

They may be wrong, or, they may be right.

That's called "capitalism". If they fail, they're wrong. New busineses will prosper, in their in their demise.

I prefer to let the business sector have its choices.

The consumer will decide. It relates directly to-FREEDOM!

You want the government in this? Get ready for $30.00 boat cushions, that used to cost $8.00.

Walmart opened up here in Pewaukee... could have been an IKEA... but they opted for a Walmart. Personally, I think it would have been fun to have an IKEA in our neighborhood, but not practical.

Mrs. Eeboater can get her scrapbooking stuff, we can stop there on the way home to pick up "that thing" that you always seem to forget when at the store.

I like having a walmart by me. I would have liked a Target better, but I ain't complaining. At least not until it turns into Ghetto trash like all WalMarts seem to end up.

Sean

Re: New Walmart (Update)

Just got back from Walmarts, It is the smallest walmart I've ever seen. We bought a GE toaster(made in China)imagine that, some Johnsonville bedder cheddars,Fruit of the loom undies for my wife,Pillsbury flour, furnace filters and a couple other things. We left there and went to local stores to buy milk, ice cream, and feed. I didn't see any hitching posts but I remember in the deal they were to make a grass parking area for horses. This walmarts has fishing stuff, guns, and most everything a regular walmarts has only with less choices per type of item. It also only has 10 checkouts. No salons but it does have tires and lube.
