I just finished installing a new water impeller and cleaned the entire fuel system on a 2001 4.5 h.p mercury. Starts and runs great in neutral, as soon as I put it in gear it will run fine on idle speed, as soon as I try to give it throttle the motor dies as if it was not getting enough fuel? I played with the only adjusting screw I could see and did not seem to make much difference. It seems if I twist the throttle ever so slowly she wants to rev but then dies. Starts again real easy. Any suggestions?

thanks much stanley man Punta Gorda fl.

Either your carb is still not clean enough or your fuel pump is faulty

Squeeze the priming bulb when accelerating and it will immediately answer the question as to which it is. With the bulb pumping fuel, you obviously don't need a fuel pump.

The load on the engine in your first example is minimal. In the water, the highest load on the engine is right where you are having problems so you need the most fuel.

I had an '80's vintage 4.5 and really liked it but could never get over the single cylinder. Having been raised on alternate firing twins, I just got spoiled.

Thanks Mark and Crem1 ................

Your advice was great, ended up installing a complete rebuild kit ($52.00), set the jet and she started first pull!. Tweeked the carb about a quarter turn and she runs better then ever.

thanks for your help ....stanleyman.............
