I have a new Yamaha F70la on order, and was wondering what size/thread lift ring I'll need.
Thanks

You won't need any special tools. Lifting eyes are attached to the block. Just a good stout rope will do.

Please don't use rope. A couple feet of chain and two shackles are much safer and less likely to break or stretch.

Re: New Yamaha F70la install question

I would not use rope in a day to day marine operation but a good nylon/dacron rope, doubled up if necessary, will approximate the srength of chain. Not as durable but it has the strength.

Whatever is used however, just be carefull. Ropes, chains and lifting eyes can all break. And remember, if a customer drops it, that is not a warranty issue.

3/8th three strand nylon has a rated breaking strength of 3340 pounds by the way. So, there is a tremendous margin of safety available.

I would be more afraid of the knots than the rope itself

Nothing holds better than 8 granny's.

This is the problem with the internet. We have no ideas as to someones level of expertise.

I would expect that someone capable of installing and rigging a motor should know how to tie knots. But I have been wrong before.

Hell, some folks want to hang and rig a motor and they don't know which end of a screwdriver goes forward.

Which is why Yam and most engine makers don't want backyardigans to try and do it themselves. I was not going to bring that up.

Ended up using a 1 ton rated come along, 3/4" eyebolt in garage rafters and a piece of chain. A lot simpler than I thought.
