Hi guys, I'm new to this site but not new to boats or the water, I have a 96 force 40hp, 2 cylinder, it has always gave me great service for the 3 years I have owned it, recently took it out on the water for the first timer this year, well had starting problems with it, starter sounded very weird, also evrytime i would spin it over it would squirt gas out the vent on the carb and do the same thing when i pumped the bubble, so i went back home and pulled the carb as it has been sitting up for around 6-8 months and i cleaned it and changed the needle valve and float, well that stops the gas squirting problem and it finally cranks! run a little rough and i shut it off and tried to crank it back after about 5-10 mins and it was very hard to start. So I get aggravated with it and take it to a boat mechanic who is pretty well known around here. So he calls me back and tells me that everything checked out good except compression, says that cyl #2 had 140 psi, cyl #1 has 35 psi, also says he run a borescope in #1 plug hole and says the cylinder is scored.
I have been reading around on here and seeing all this stuuf about rings being stuck and the DECARB?? my question is do you think its poissible that carbon has my rings stuck on that cylinder? Boat ran great all last year that i ran it, just had a little idle problem and thats it, motor is on a 17' alumacraft and would never hesitate to pull me at 220 pounds up on a kneeboard. I want to know how to decarb this thing as far as the chemical and the procedure and if you think it would help? Thanks in advance for replies guys!

Re: Newb here, FORCE question please

I would get a comp. Tester and do the test myself just to satisfy any second guessing about comp. Now if the cylinder wall has scoring marks already present then a d-carb wont fix comp. Did he tell you how the spark plugs looked? I have a 89 125 force, and I actually had a carb bowl loosen and fall off while motor was running at full throttle. This caused not only cylinder wall damage, but also broken rings. The absence of proper lubricant in two cylinders will damage the motor. However if it were me I would get a comp. Testing gage and perform the test myself. Seafoam is the product to use, for the d-carb, and directions on the bottle are pretty clear on how to use it.
Good luck and im sure others will have more advice.

Well, i changed the plugs right before i took it to him, they did not look bad at all to me, I'm an automotive technician not a outboard tech, I will do a comp test myself to verify results, I just don't see how it would be possible to run so good last season and then have a broken ring problem so quickly.... thanks

Haha. I understand completely. One thing I've learned about these chrysler motors is one minute there running great and then in a blink of an eye running like crap. Thank goodness we have this forum to get help, and help each other out.

If there was any chance that cylinder wasn't getting enough lubricant then the broken ring and scoring can happen in a very short time. I hope it was miss diagnosed , and your back on the water having fun.
Good luck and let us know what you find.

They can run great on a cylinder that's going bad.
Either way don't mess with it.Just pull the head and look inside.
The scraping of the rings and piston can happen in just a few minutes.
It could be going bad for a while.
I bought a 125 and it ran GREAT.
Decided to sell,Took off the head and found scoring deep enough for a rebore.
It still had 150#comp on all 4
Actually had it sold.I wouldn't sell to anyone in that condition. Now it's my next project!!

i understand that, he said the scoring didn't look real deep but if the are I'm going to rebuild myself, where is the best place to order parts to overhaul these engines if you don't mind?

Your a good man jerry. Alot of people would just sell the problem to someone else.

Re: Newb here, FORCE question please

First off, don't assume the low compression is from the scoring.

The scoring may have been there for 10 years, from a previous owner.

Your low comp could be from a blown head gasket for all we know at this point.

Pull the head, inspect pistons, rings, walls, ports.

If no major damage is found, I would invest in a new gasket, put it back together and try it.

IF you need to rebuild, perhaps you only need a hone job and rings.

Yes, you can bore just on cylinder on these motors.

If you replace a piston, you want the Wiseco pistons found:

Make sure you get the piston for the correct model year.

Post back with your results, it will most likely help another reader/member.

Re: Newb here, FORCE question please

Well, motor is back together running better than ever, found out that it was a blown head gasket between the cylinders, just letting all the compression go into the water jacket, I'm so relieved maybe i can get 3-4 more years out of this motor before I jump ships and move to a 4-stroke. There was absolutely no scoring in the cylinder, could still see the factory hone marks. We changed the head gasket and rechecked compression and had 150 psi on both cylinders, and after a few mins of carb tuning and cable adjusting, she was running fine! Thanks alot for all your help guys!
