I like that Caravelle. If you could get that price a little lower all the better. We can all like the Four Winns all we want but until we find out for sure it isn't an OMC it's all speculation.

Update: I just received a response email from the owner of the Four Winns. The outdrive is a Ford.

(I know nothing -- I didn't even know Ford made marine engines.)

The motor started life as a Ford. The outdrive will turn out to be an OMC- betcha.

The way it works is this. I'll confine it to modern Mercruiser and Volvo-Penta. Merc or Volvo buys GM motors. Each of those then takes that motor and puts their own touches on it. There are gaskets that need to be changed, ancillaries that need to be added, and outdrives that they need to be hooked up to. In short, Mercruiser customizes the motor their way, Volvo-Penta does the same things their own way. But, at the heart of it is the GM motor.

Now, go back a few years. in addition to outdrive manufacurers Mercruiser and Volvo-Penta (the survivors), you also had OMC and even Yamaha for a couple of years.

In addition to 'marinizing' GM engines, some used Fords as well. No more. In my experience the Fords I've seen are all OMC.

Okay, thanks once again everyone, and I have both narrowed and expanded my list. The first four are out. The Caravelle is a strong contender, along with this newly-posted boat:

2005 Bayliner 18' 3.0L Mercury. For such a relatively-new boat, is that $6K price tag a little low?

if i were you, pay a mechanic to go and check out the caravelle. i had the 19' version of that boat, very well made. 3.0 fine for that size. i like antique boats and motors and force motors are rough and smokey even for me. if i were trying to fall in love with boating, and persuade my wife, a smokey buzzy force would make a tough sell. nothing nicer than the quiet, out of sight IO.
