Im not very familiar with boat motors so forgive my 'dumb' questions. :)These questions are in reference to a 1978 M800 80HP Mercury

There are two cables that run into the engine at the same spot. Im just 'guessing' that they may have something to do with throttle. How do I remove these from the engine? I tug a little and there is no give so I imagine there is something else that needs to be done.

2- Is there any way to tell how many hours are on these motors? I peeked around and didnt seen any type of odometer.

3- My steering seems frozen. I think maybe the 'tube' that the steering arm connects to is locked up. There is a grease nipple here so Im going to lube it up. What should I use for lube? Will just regular auto grease work?

3.5- How do I remove the steering cable from the motor? I cant seem to figure out what needs to be done. I see two large brass colored nut type things, one on each end. Do I just remove these and slip it out?

I'll be forever greatful if someone can answer these questions.

THANKS ALOT!

The first thing I would do if I were you is buy a service manual. The 2 cables are shift and throttle. Remove the cowl and unsnap the retainer closest to the front of the engine. Then remove the 7/16 nut holding the throttle cable and remove the cable. Now you should see the shift cable and it's retainer.

There is no hour meter that comes standard with this motor.

To remove the steering cable take the 9/16 nut off the steering arm and remove the arm from the cable. Then loosen the large nut on the far right side of the engine. This should allow you to remove the steering cable. You might spray a penetrating oil on the cable and as much as possible in the steering tube. (PB Blaster works well)

Good luck
