Hi all
I recently bought an old boat with a 1978 Chrysler 75Hp outboard installed.
It runs like a top but the power trim motor is no good.
I would like to order a replacement but most places want the old part number to cross reference too.
I haven't removed the old unit yet as i don't want water getting into the system, but i cant find any markings on the power trim unit.
Is there a specific place on it i should be looking?
Or maybe its on the back?

i really would like to order the right one the first time

Thanks for your time.

Well, a 1978 could be a 2 wire or 3 wire motor. A two wire motor will have a black plastic reservoir and a three wire motor will have a white aluminum reservoir. The three wire system will have a very heavy wire running to the dasboars switch and a red and black connected directly to the battery.

The pump is basically the same and held to either reservoir by 4 screws. It will fit either reservoir.

SO: Actually, any direct replacement motor will fit and you are having a needlessly difficult time. If you have a 3 wire motor, you do not have relays and unless you do a simple modification to add relays you must stay with this system. IF you have a 2 wire motor, you can replace with either a 2 or 3 wire motor. HOWEVER: the reservoirs are different so you really should buy a complete motor and reservoir assembly.

Now again, if you have a 2 wire motor, there are lots on ebay and you don't need a cross reference number. simply look for an early Force motor. Three wire motors were used on the earlier Chrysler engines

Come back and let us know what you now have: 2 or 3 wire system.
