1986 omc 4.3 recently have had some shifting problems. Its hard to find reverse and neutral shifting from forward gear. I got our tow rope tangled up in the prop and im a moron so i was trying to throw it in Gear pretty hard with the controls. I have not took the stern off. I have had a buddy adjust it a few times at the shifti g bracket on the motor. It will work great for a few minutes or even a whole day. But it will always be screwed up the next time i go out. My question is i got a quote of around $400-450 to replace the transom shift cable at a local marina. Is that a fair price? Thats including parts and labor. Thanks

Re: Newbie shift problems

well, if you are semi-handy.. you are looking at 70 dollars for the cable and gaskets/o-rings - 55 dollars for the shift cable tools and a afternoon of fun.. so if you can pull the drive yourself... and have 125 dollars... you can save that 300 dollars for a few full days of boating gas...

Ive read that thread about 20 times. Lol just trying to get my courage up to tackle this on my own. I purchased a oem manuel. Just waiting for it. Do you guys know the best place to buy the parts and even them "special" tools. A few links would be appreciated. Thanks for the help.

That thread is what prompted me to do mine. I had no clue what I was doing, but with this site, my manual and a very helpful person on here (IdleSeedOnly) I'm making great progress. (still waiting for my parts) Do you have an Ebay account? I have found most sellers on there are 10 to 20 even more less $$ then most online paces. I'm not going to buy those "special tools", as I feel I know how to make a 90 degree angle with the bell crank, and measure the cable.

Before you take the outdrive off, are you sure your limit switch to cut the engine back is working. (it stalls out the motor some when shifting gears).

I almost hate to say this but your problem almost sounds like what mine was doing. Mine wasn't the cable at all. It was the shifter rod. After removing the outdrive, I found my cable (though broken) was operating fine. My shifter rod was stiff, and very hard to move. After moving it up and down a couple of times it would work okay.. Then after sitting a little while it would stiffen up again.. hard. So I thought I would separate the upper and lower and find out what is going on. (something I DID NOT want to do)

It take a lot, a lot of work getting the upper and lower apart. If you do this, BE VERY CAREFUL. That pot metal will damage easy.. but if you take your time you can do it. It took me (with a persons help) about 5 hours. (but my bearing housing was full of salt and corroded so that's what made mine so hard)

So, after getting them apart, I removed the 6 bolts holding the shifter rod and found the rod was full of junk. It was sticking on the upper and lower seals. I cleaned it all off, and ordered a new shifter rod cover and wiper and seal. I'm still not 100% sure there isn't something else wrong down lower, but fear and common sense is keeping me from taking the lower shaft out (what drives the prop)

If you do this, I and others will be watching your posts asking what else is needed. You can check your shifter rod with out having to take the upper off the lower. Once you remove your outdrive move your rod up and down and see how stiff it is to move. Mine was froze and the only way to pull it is to remove the upper unit from the lower.

Re: Newbie shift problems

Can you verify if it's the cable is by having your buddy unhook it at the motor and shift it back there? If it's still "stiff", then you have a bigger problem, as Boats-A-Lot is into. If it shifts fine there, then you're down to the cable, or possibly something binding in the control box. Either way, it's always better to find out what your problem truly is, before you take it to anybody. Those guys don't work for free, and if you can save yourself the "diagnostic charge" then do so. Worse still is if you pay someone to change out the cable and find out you still have an issue. And, there's nothing wrong with paying someone to do whatever you're not comfortable with. It's a lot less expensive to do work yourself, of course, but that's not always for everybody.

Re: Newbie shift problems

If you are constantly adjusting the shift cable and it stops working the next day, your lower shift cable has definitely failed. Tilt up the drive and look at the cable housing where it enters the drive on the starboard side. That is where the housing usually fails.

Do yourself a big favor and try to locate the OEM cable. The aftermarket cables are just not as good.

That sounds way to cheap. He might have not been quoting labor.

No that was labor. He didnt know the price of the part. He said 60-80 for the cable. So in assuming 300. Anything under 300 wouldnt kill me. I still would like to learn how to repair it myself though.

Re: Newbie shift problems

The OEM cable is going to be over $250 but I suggest using it vs aftermarket cables.

Re: Newbie shift problems

See, I paid a shop $480 to replace my cable, and it broke about the 3rd time I used it. So that was $480 down the drain. (well.. I got new bellows and U joints. Looking at the cable I ordered (didn't know there was an OEM one) if I ever have to replace it, I'm going to have one made. I was surprised how thinly cheap the inner core is. No wonder my new one broke. I wouldn't hang a picture off the inner core of the cable I bought.

The work I have done and doing It's really not as hard as it sounds. I have never done anything like this before, ever. With out the help of this site I would be stuck trusting a shop to fix it right, and I'm just not sure those kinds of shops are around here. At this point I'am so so so thankful I'm doing it myself. I would have already racked up about $1,400 had I take it to a shop. So far with all parts ordered Im just at $205. (and that's buying the parts a lot cheaper then what a shop charges you for)

Re: Newbie shift problems

Interesting thread. I love tinkering with my equipment. Just putting a new motor in as we speak and the mechanic doesn't seem to think it will be hard to adjust my (now) smoothly operating cable. It's threads like this that give me the confidence to do it myself if needed. Knowing how finicky those cables are and learning how to do it correctly is extremely important as we all know. Thanks for the info!

Re: Newbie shift problems

That definitely would make shifting out of gear near impossible unless you have your idle set VERY low.
