You are missing that little metal arm with a roller like on the end of it. YES, that would make your shifting hard. The switch is made by Cherry micro switches, and somewhat hard to find. I will do a search and see if I can find it too. If I do I will post it.

Oh, Bruce already found it. :) Edit

Edit again. If you start you motor (on the water muff) take your finger and press in on that button on that switch.. See if your motor stalls. That would tell you that your switch is at least working.. You may MAY be able to just buy that metal arm. It looks like some one was trying to adjust your shifting and not understanding what that switch is for and broke that arm off. ????

Re: Newbie shift problems

im lost with that website.

You should get used to using the site though. It is where you are gonna find any part numbers and diagrams to your setup. Its not that hard.

Select "sterndrive" then Year/Model.

The exploded diagrams are VERY helpful when doing work on your boat.

Re: Newbie shift problems

Interesting thread. I love tinkering with my equipment. Just putting a new motor in as we speak and the mechanic doesn't seem to think it will be hard to adjust my (now) smoothly operating cable. It's threads like this that give me the confidence to do it myself if needed. Knowing how finicky those cables are and learning how to do it correctly is extremely important as we all know. Thanks for the info!

Lake84, I know huh? (Laughing) I did a search on the web for OMC shifting and found thousands and thousands of problems and it all comes to everything all the switches, cable, shifter arm, dog clutch motor, seals, wiper and a partridge in a pear tree have to be in perfect working order to have these shift smooth. That really bad thing is a lot of boat shops do not know how to do this. Really.. call around.. some will say OH YEAH WE CAN DO THAT.. but if they don't know the OMC way.. they don't know how these monsters shift.

I found a few. All around $50-$60. Who do you guys buy parts from?

Ebay, West Marine, local boat shops. If I find a new site to buy from I do a search in what ever name of the shop like Marineparts.com and put the word review behind it. If there are bad reviews or complaints about the site, it will show up on a google search.

Don't feel bad about removing that little arm, the A-hole that replaced my cable at the shop told me "yeah, you really don't need that". Uh huh.. and HE works on boats for a living.. Actually, the shop is not longer there.. Geeee.. I wonder why. Replacing the cable isn't bad at all.. so if you order one, and having trouble figuring out where to start, I'll give you my phone number in a PM and walk you through it.

Re: Newbie shift problems

Here comes another stupid question... Is it ok to take the boat out on the lake in this condition? I have the idle set low and it goes into forward gear just fine. I can survive without reverse and i will just have to kill the motor for neutral. Thanks for all the help this forum is a stress reliever. Lol

Re: Newbie shift problems

If the cable has a problem, and is not fully engaging the gears, taking it out could cause a major failure that is REALLY expensive to fix. There are too many stories about the gears in the cobra getting destroyed because of a improperly positioned bellcrank or cable length.. I would not risk it... order the cable and the tools, because 150 bucks now will save you 1000's later...

It's a really easy fix... you can do it...

http://www.midnight-wolf.com/OMC_Cobra_Shift_Cable_Adjustment2.pdf

and as far as using it with a malfunctioning ESA, I am pretty sure that can ruin your clutch dogs

Re: Newbie shift problems

Update... Marine mechanic called me back with an official estimate of $812 i about fainted! He said there was 3inches of water in there. He recomended i fix the bellows,u joints, gimbal bearing and the shift cable was screwed up bad. $340 for parts and the rest for labor. He have me the option of not fixing the u joints but he said they could seize at anytime given how much water was in there. I told him just to fix everything! And it better hift like a damn cadillac. I learned my lesson!!!
