nice job looks great. how much gell coat did you end up using .

Just shy of 2 gallons. Not sure if I did it right, but I got it pretty thick where I figured foot traffic will be.

Re: Newbie with gel coat ?

Not sure if anyone remembers this project, but thought I would give a small update. The whole family loved the new layout. Getting rid of the back to back seats and adding the pedestals worked great. From kneeboarding and wakeboarding to fishing, the layout was 100% better. feels like a ton more room. The SeaDek worked great also. No slip and easy on bare feet. Did accidently drop a wakeboard on floor. took out a small gouge. Will need to fix that soon.
Now for update. I have started the small finish work on the sides. I bought some small dowels and cut them to fit all the angels and corners. I coated them with resin today. My plan is to tack them to the upper edges of the sides, where carpet meets gel, then seal/ coat them, smooth it all out, then gel it to match. I am hoping it will give a more finished look.IMG_0217.jpg
I hope you can see the new wood on edge.

Thanks for keeping us posted. Good to hear that they new layout worked better for you/family. What wood did you use, Teak?!

Not all types of wood will survive the harsh marine environment. Teak, with its oily nature, is rot resistance and will last you very long time but it is also high maintenance.

I am not sure what kind of wood it is. Probably just pine, its from HD. My thought was that if I resin all sides then cover in gel coat to match the floor it would be protected. I am probably wrong though.

Resin & Gelcoat alone are probably not going to be long lasting. The wood is probably fairly soft pine, and extremely NON-rot resistant.

Have you considered the composite type trim in HD, like PVC or similar? These are not wood so no need to worry about rot and also you can get them to look really – really – nice with simple plastic spray primer and paint cans like Rust-Oleum

By the way, PL construction adhesive works with this type of trim really nicely forming a strong bond for both joining the material together and to a fiberglass/wood substrate

You know I saw it there, looked at it, and thought there was no way it would work. Kept thinking neither resin or gel would stick well.
I will have to go check it out tomorrow.

Have you considered using something like Auto Trim Moulding. The kind like they use to trim the edges of doors and trunk lids.

I'm thinking it would protect and dress up the edges really nice.

you've got white vinyl just above that gunwale pocket.

If you go pvc, get white, & just apply it to the top of that lip. No paint, make it a design element accent. then no paint to chip

But this is the point of using them. No need to resin or GC. If you are not happy with how they look plain, give it some primer and paint and make it yours.
