I am new to iboats and i am ashamed to say that I have not winterized my boat. The last time I used my boat was in the summer of 07. It has been sitting in my driveway through two winters, in which the outside temp gets into the low 20's. I know it is probably wishful thinking, but is there anyway i didn't trash the motor?

Is there anyway to tell if I cracked the block without running it?

The motor is a volvo penta 5.0GL-E I/O.

If only I had taken the time. Man im an idiot.

Re: Newby. Didn't winterize

stick yer head in the motor well and look at the sides of the block

if you see any horizontal cracks or rusty water trails, you have a cracked block

the block does not have to be cracked on the outside to be junk

it could be cracked internally, also the intake or exhaust manifolds could be cracked too

You might have got lucky. Crank it on some muffs and see if you see any water leaks. Run it for a few minutes then check the oil and see if it looks like a milkshake. If you don't see any leaks and the oil stays clear, take it out to the water and run it. Keep an eye on it and check it after the first few minutes.

The cracks could be external, they could also be internal. The only way to find out is to isolate the engine from the manifolds and pressure check the block. If it doesn't hold pressure, you have a problem. What that problem is could be a crack external or internal, a blown core plug, or a head gasket (highly unlikely). If it doesn't hold pressure, listening to where the air escapes will be your first clue to where the leak is.

I'm sure the gas was not treated either...You may have to drain the tank and get fresh fuel in it before you can get it started to look for leaks..

Whatever route you go that was terrible to just let it set and freeze..

Put it on muffs in the driveway and see if you can start it. I doubt that gas is any good, though.

Make sure you check the oil level in the engine and in the drive before you fire it up. If the oil level in the engine rises while it's running, you're likely in need of a new block and possibly more.

Probably another stupid question but I am attempting to siphon the old gas out, but isn't working to well. Is there another way to get old gas out of the fuel tank?

There is a thing in the top of the fuel pickup called an "Anti Siphon Valve" it's designed to PREVENT the possibility of a siphon incase of a line breakage.
You need a fuel pump to drain the tank. A cheap automotive electric pump with some hose and fittings will do the job.

Finally got the 20 plus gallons of old gas out of the tank. Is there anything else I should replace (filters etc.) before attempting to run it? Or just fire it up and see how it does.

Re: Newby. Didn't winterize

you could just try starting it, but it if were me i'd pull the filters and have a look at them first. of course, once you pull them it's easier to just put new ones in. if it runs and you're not getting water into the oil, cylinders or bilge, then if it was me i'd change the plugs, oil & filter, and pull the sterndrive to lube it. don's suggestion to pressure test the block is probably the best plan, though.
