I recently installed a new impeller on my 78 Evinrude 55hp after I noticed that there was extremly little water coming out of the "pisser" (sorry for the crudeness).
After I replaced the impeller, no water was coming out, so I went back to the impeller and lubricated it. Now, white smoke comes out of the lower unit when I start it, and it looks like the water is still not making into the upper unit. Any suggestions on what my next step should be are greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Are you sure you installed the impeller key when you reassembled it?

Yes, the key was reinstalled as well, and I checked to make sure that the empeller turned when the prop turned before attaching the lower unit.

Are you sure the water tube went into the pump body?

Most likely the water tube and/or the grommet(s) did not get back into position.

How do you make sure the water tube is correctly postioned? The lower unit seemed to fit correctly when it was re-attached. If the water tube is not aligned correctly, would this cause the white smoke as well?

Hi Chad,
You've almost certainly missed the water tube/pump housing connection. The "white smoke" coming out of the tell tale is probably steam from a too hot powerhead. Take the lower unit off again and reinstall making sure you get the water tube into the pump housing.
Backlash

I just experienced a similar thing with my 1980 Johnson 55.

I rebuilt the water pump, even though the tell tale stream was very strong, because the engine was new to me. When I started the engine to see if it all worked , there was very little water coming from the tell tale. The head wasn't getting hot, so I let it run for a while. Then the tell tale stream dried up altogether, but the head still didn't get hot.

So I poked a piece of wire into the pee hole and gave it a wiggle, and as I pulled it out the stream of water came out stronger than ever! It seems that some foreign body had worked it's way round the cooling system and became lodged in the pee hole!

Don't know about the white smoke though. You say it's coming out the lower unit and not the pee hole?
