Did you see any rust on the spark plugs, if you did, then there is probably rust in the cylinders as well, and NO, with no plugs in it, it should turn fairly easy. But before you panic too much, pull the drive and try to turn it over by hand.
If the gimbal bearing is locked up (or worse yet the drive) it will not allow you to turn the engine.
DO NOT try to use the starter if the engine won't turn by hand.
If you do have rust on the spark plugs, pull the heads and look. If the cylinders are rusty you sure don't want to just break it loose and try running it as that would destroy the rings for sure.

As don said pull the drive and see if the engine will turn with it off. If it still doesn't turn, you might try carefully using a screwdriver on the flywheel teeth ( not a prybar, as the screwdriver will break before you do damage to the teeth). This may free it up, if not, you are looking at tearing the engine down.

Then he needs to pull the engine apart and find out why it won't turn. Pulling the heads is easy.
Like I mentioned before, if it is rust in the cylinders, breaking it loose and running it is not a good idea. Might work on an old truck, but not a boat engine that runs at 3000+ rpm under full load all the time.

If it's locking up when you turn it, it may be a broken rod. The rod (or what is left of it) is just hitting something as you turn it.
If you can turn it, and it doesn't lock up, turn it over and feel each cylinder. You should get compression on each one, even turning it by hand a little bit at a time. If no compression, see if you can feel the piston moving up and down as you slowly turn the engine. Usually a piece of solid core house wire will bend enough to feel the piston, and soft enough to not damage anyting.

Get a manual before you go any further. If you don't know which goes on first the head or the intake manifold and don't have a service manual, then you shouldn't be messing with it.

Bolo, Either I am reading your post wrong or Don is. Are you saying that the balancer bolt is turning (tightening) but the crankshaft has not moved ? Or are you saying that the whole thing is turning to a point and stopping ?
As for dissasembling, the fuel line comes off, the wiring disconnected, then the distributer, then the intake, then loosen rockers, make holes in cardboard to keep track of which push rod goes where, then remove head.

i will have to pull the head no matter waht because the tube that came on the wd40 spray fell in one of the spark plug hole. lsat year we tear down my friends 350 engine and iam pretty much sure the intake manifold is the last peice to go on i meant the heads go on first, right

I would suggest to stop turning the engine over with the balancer bolt. You might wring it off. I have seen some engines, where it would be a night mare to get the broken bolt out.

Re: news update on my free boat ?????is it seize

While I can't comment on old truck engines ?? I can say that I have worked on several early 90's Merc 5.7's this year (including about six complete rebuilds). If this engine has been sitting for some time and you are trying to turn it over by the harmonic balancer bolt and are starting to get nervous that the bolt might break.....then stop. Either use a screwdriver on the flywheel(you'll have more leverage) or put a known good starter on it. A little bit of surface rust on several components can lead to one hard to turn over engine. If it's really rusted/seized you are going to have to tear it all the way down and do a complete rebuild including new rings and honing the cylinder walls (as well as other things like valve work, etc.).
If it is just "stuck" you might get it free and then be able to proceed with compression tests, leak down tests, etc. to check on the condition of the rings, valves, etc.

Let the marvel mystery oil do it's "majic", it needs to sit for some time (3 days or so, add more) before full benefits can see expected.

Bolo,
Not on the balancer, use the screwdriver or pry bar against the flywheel ring gear teeth.
You get more leverage there. Try to turn the motor backwards first and see if it will begin rocking back and forth. Dont use the starter motor to bump it over or something will break.

Peter

Bolo,

Craftsman makes a heavy duty strap wrench that will fit around the balancer pulley. It's about $20. After you get the heads off, you can use the strap wrench to turn the crank over. DO NOT continue to turn the crank bolt. You will snap it off.

The Engine is going to be nothing more than junk if it's turned over with rust in the cylinders.
I don't care what type of marvel oils you put in there. It may let it finally turn, but it will only be a short time bandaid fix, not a repair of a marine engine to but in a boat to go out on the water where you can't walk home from, and then run under full load all the time.
If you want to be an engine hack, do it on cars or trucks so you can pull over to the side of the road when it takes the big dump. Not out on the water.....Tows are very expensive. And if the weather is bad, it could also be down right deadly.
