Bolo, I think you know that I am "with you" on trying to get this thing to turn. As long as it is just a little bit of surface rust, I think you will be fine. Just wondering, how long has this engine been sitting ? Not wanting to jump ahead of things....but.... if it has been sitting for a long time ( a few years or more) remember that you may have some valve issues to deal with and don't forget that you have a few valve springs that have been compressed for that same length of time......might not be up to the task of running at any serious rpm's without being replaced.

bolo
dons not being negitive he is trying to keep you safe i live on long island to and haveing to travel out of the ocean inlets to go fishing is a bad place to have a problem

with all the friends you have to help the cheepest thing you can do is pull the motor and go through it do rings and heads and then your going to have a trouble free motor for the cost of some parts and elbow grease

much better than finding a drive getting it all running and then have a problem hafe way through next summer

tommays

I don't know Don personally, we have never met. I'd love to have him as a nieghbor though. He is actually being very positive. I understand the excitement of a new project. I understand the expen$e of this type of project verses the cost of living. I don't fully understand the cost of life, cause I have only been close to death and dying. Be safe. Be concerned w/ the safety of your fellow man.
Suggestion, after you get your project up and running, use it in a confined space, a small lake thats not too cold. NOT in the ocean or on a river. But somewhere where you can swim to shore, or if there are others with you that can't swim, then they will have their life vests ON and float to shore. Also when you get this running, there are requirements that you must meet by the local enforcement agencys, possibly the Coast Guard. Check with them, usally it's a free inspection. It they catch you on the waters w/o your sticker then your free project will take on the not such a bargan $tatus. Here, we are checked often.

One more thing, listen to the advice of most of these that post here...sl

So now you're going to put that engine back into service... Terrific... You ever read a Coast Guard Op-Sums sheet? You are going to get a lesson in "how to become a statistic"! What have you got to lose? If you can honestly ask that question, then you have nothing, absolutely nothing to lose... Don gets alot of flack in here, some even rightfully so, but only because hell tells it like it is.( I am NOT defending Don, just stating facts ) He (& myself) has seen thousands of guys like you. Always believing that with a little elbow grease, they can make something from nothing. Meanwhile putting not only themselves, but others also at risk. Lemme know when you get it in the water, I'm staying home that day!

Bolo, that is what I thought would happen when you used the screwdriver on the flywheel. If it was really seized, it still wouldn't have budged.
You'll find out the condition of the rings when you do compression tests, and further when you start it an see how it sounds and if it smokes.
As in my previous post, the valve seats and valve springs might be a concern. Weak springs won't show up untill the engine is at high rpm's and if one fails....well, not a pretty picture. Keep us posted of your progress.

I think everyone's getting pretty heated. It's Bolo's swim. As for Don and Waterone, you can come work on my boat anytime. I don't know a lot about engines, so I go about everything very slowly, and get help when I don't know. I can do the fiberglass myself, but contrary to my name, I don't like swimming. It scares the fish. I get help with engine work, and with all due respect, Bolo, you might want to consider doing the same.

Tear it down and rebulid it right dude. I learned my leeson the hard way. You can do it for well less than a thousand dollars and have an awesome motor.
If it is cracked in a cylinder wall or oil galley you wont notice until it is to late.
Clean and Bore Block $175-$225
Pistons $75-$150 Ebay
Rings $40.00 2nd Moly
Crank and Rod Bearings $20 a set
Gasket kit $80.00(Full) Advanced
Stainless Steel Head Gasket($40.00)
Freeze Plugs $15.00
You get the point...its not bad if you have the time.
A good solid motor.......Priceless

I agree with everyone who recommends doing a rebuild. As the saying goes,"If you have the time to do again than you have time to do it right the first time".
