This question involves the 1988 mercury 115 inline six in my previous post. Overall the motor runs strong, but i do have a few issues. When cold, the motor starts fine, idles fine, and turns around 5300 to 5500 rpm. Once it warms up, it has a tendency to bog while going to wot, and only turns around 4500. It does not cut out or miss at this rpm, it just never reaches full rpm. I've got good compression (129-135), fresh fuel and lines, gas mixed at 50:1. I pulled the plugs and none looked fouled to me, although i wasnt used to the flat style plugs in this motor. I know there was one switch box (in the last post i referred to it as a power pack) replaced and a new water pump put on. I just ordered a service manual from mercury for this motor, but was wondering if there was a way to test the stator, or switch box before i get the manual.

Btw, pumping the bulb does nothing to help the rpms jump, nor does choking it. Also, when it drops the upper rpm range, it no longer idles as smooth.

Ck the ign. timing and the w/pump it sounds like preignition, if the stator was failing you would lose 3 cyls. so if it's not missing thats probably not the problem, if the engine is not missing like you say then it could also be a lean condition on 1 carb

Re: Next question, ign related i believe.

Sorry it took me so long to get back on here guys, ive been working alot lately. I checked my timing, and the synch of the the carbs, and all was good. I ordered my manual, and all the electrical specs were within tolerance, so i borrowed a known good switch box and swapped it with the old ones, one at a time. BINGO!! I now have 5500 rpm at speed, and enough grunt to keep it on plane at lower speeds to boot.

Thanks to everyone who took time to answer this, and im really sorry it took so long to reply, maybe this will help someone.

Also, if anyone is thinking about getting a manual for one of these motors, the Mercury oem manual is sweet, way better than the seloc's ive seen.
