Why does the starter have to break the day before our trip to the beach house!!!!! Now I am scrambling to find a new starter. One guy says he has one, well see.

Bad boat...BAD!

I guess its better than breaking on the water.

NAPA can get you one pretty quickly. Also, did you consider pulling it and having it rebuilt. A start shop can do it in just a couple of hours.

that is what you get for not checking it 2 days before. i expect in the next couple of days we will see "it won't start, why, it did 6 months ago?" have to be on the water for the 4th.

Did you do the troubleshooting to verify that the starter is bad, KIZ?

Four out of five "bad" starters aren't. Three out of those four have starter cable problems.

Sometimes a sluggish starter can be made to work by cleaning out the inside where the brushes contack the rotor. A tootbrush works good for this and a little light sanding of the brushes.A little light oil on the bearings helps too. This quick fix can may at least get you going for now.

It was the gear slipping on the shaft. Starter would turn, but gear would slip and thus the motor wouldnt turn over. Starter was old too, one of the brushes was broken, and the windings insulation was melted off. Now the thing turns over faster than ever.

BUT....

Now there is a problem with the bottom cylinder. It has a miss that leaves me running on two cylinders at anything above idle. GRRRRRR  I actually had visiions of pointing it at the bulkhead, full speed ahead, and just jump off.

Oh well, gotta have it fixed for the next outing in two weeks.
