I do most of my fishing at night in a small river. i have been looking at differnt lighting options. the river is only about 70 feet across and lots of turns and floating logs. what kind of lights are you guys using to get around? anybody tryed the go-light remote spotlights? what are you using on the boat to tie knots and roll Js? do red lights realy help at night?

Re: Night Lights

I reckon an uber bright hand held would work best for tight rivers. Much faster "scan" than a remote.
And fixed "Driving lights" would be darn tough to aim unless you had enough of them to cover all the angles. And of course, illegal if law enforcement might be a problem on your water. Dangerous in a couple different ways if you can expect other traffic.

As for the J's,, Pre-roll! Wind is a mutha! LOL!

I've read that black light makes mono line really visible, paper would light up well too.

I fish at night too and use a 1.5 million hand held occasoinally, I know where all the snags are and don't deal with floating debris too much.

I rarely use the light though, it seems to make it harder to see, I have better luck just reading the water by moon light, you cna pick out a pop can at 200'.

Hand held search light for tight navigation and a strap on head light for in the boat work. The one I have from walmart is LED and has like 4 settings. One of them is red so you dont screw with your night vision. I like the headlight because the light is small and focused and leaves your hands free to roll.

fishing blue led's. as far as navigation, it is illegal to have head lights on continuously. they only legal light is a spot light for a quick look at suspicious stuff.

Re: Night Lights

Low-output red light will preserve night-blindness, but only because of its weak output. If you can find a green light that outputs the same level of light (lumens), it will also preserve night-blindness and run much longer on a set of batteries (it puts out more light for a given amperage).

As mentioned, momentary use of spotlight is about your best option (legal and otherwise). Keep in mind that one use of a spotlight will destroy your night-blindness for at least 5 minutes, thus the recommendation to use them only as a last resort. Night vision takes at least 30 minutes to fully develop, and any hint of light will reduce it.

Check out the light discussions over at www.candlepowerforums.com especially the LED light forums. The enthusiasts over there are all about getting the MOST as well as the LEAST amount of light out of their flashlights. With current high-quality LED flashlights (hint: you can't get them at WallyWorld), a 2-AA flashlight (e.g. - Fenix TK20) can out-throw a typical 3-C Maglite. By the same token, you can purchase a flashlight that has just enough glow to help you navigate around the house late at night, and such a flashlight will run for several days if not weeks on a single AA battery. The low light is all about preserving your night vision.
