I'm in the market for a 6hp engine for my 19 foot sailboat, as my 1986 Johnson died this weekend! I've heard that the Nissan, Tohatsu and Mercury 6hp 4 stroke is the exact same engine. Does anyone know if this is true, and if so, is it a reliable engine? If not, any other recommendations for a 6hp? Thanks!

All the same and nothing "better" on the market. Better is a relative term depending on what you value most.

Just how did your Johnny "Die"? Dang thing isn't even 30.

Just MHO, but it is a better outboard than anything made today, by anyone.

Yes, Tohatsu makes the 6 hp Nissan, and also the 6 hp Merc. For sail applications, Tohatsu/Nissan offers an Ultra-Long (25" shaft) model, as well as a "trick" EE (elephant ear) HT (high thrust) prop for much-improved low-speed thrust. We have had great success with the 6 UL with HT prop on sail applications.

Thanks much for the advice, all! PVANV, I thought of the 25" shaft, but I'm afraid it will "drag" in the water when sailing. My present 20" shaft already drags, when raised. My stern pulpit prevents me from tilting the motor all the way back!
