NITRIC ACID : is the only acid that cleans salt deposits in the outboard motors that i rebuild , it is also the only acid that does not eat the aluminum , you can use it with out being diluted . RECOMMENDED : GET THE SAFETY INFO FROM THE CHEMICAL SUPPLIER BEFORE YOU USE THIS" NITRIC ACID " What I do is mix it with white vinegar ,or water & leave the parts for a few hours in the mixture , the more nitric acid you mix in with the white vinegar , the quicker the results ,then after hose off with the garden hose , THIS ACID ONLY WORKS ON ALUMINUM , DO NOT USE THIS ACID ON STEEL .if you gona use parts with steel in rub grease on , stainless steel no problem at all remove all steel parts from the aluminum , nuts bolts etc .
the photos will show how this acid cleaned these parts
can also make your own saltaway

That is an excellent picture showing how the baffle plate warps around the exhaust port area and squirts water into the cylinders. Are you going to do something about that?

EDIT: OK, I just read your other post. Glad you are taking care of it. That is the biggest killer of those motors.

yes i agree with you , i always find after stripping the exhaust box,s 0n early 1970 ties 70hp motors, that's where water gets into the exhaust port through the center port , the reason being is that they did not cast enough bolting places around that area , it makes it a weak spot , & with the heat around there iam not surprised it lifts & the salt gets in , causing all the damage , KEEP & eye open I WILL show you how to fix this problem k , CHEERS

to desalt the motor i did this with my special formula , made covers & poured the nitric acid into the block , made some gaskets out of cheap rubber , to do this job .some photos of before & after i did this

Re: NITRIC ACID ,Durbans , desalting of outboard motors

today i desalted the leg of the 70hp iam rebuilding I do RECOMMEND this for any one that uses his outboard in sea water , if you dilute it with water it does not attack steel , with ally it fine no problem what so ever , you can even make your own salt away , buy 1ltr 20dlrs the 70% nitric acid & mix this with 20ltrs water , have a look at the photo & see how well this nitric acid works , it was full of salt deposits , which you cannot scrape off , i lay the leg down in my mix for 3days the more nitric acid you mix the faster the job . now ready for painting with my formula

DURBANS nitric acid & ceased piston rings on piston

DURBANS nitric acid & ceased piston rings on piston

the rings on this piston are ceased into the groove , salt water got into the port ,it is almost imposable to get them off without breaking them , my formula gets them out & even cleans up the groove to .

if you gonna use any parts with mild steel in them rub grease on them it will eat it if you don't put grease , it does not attack the aluminum at all , can also be diluted with water to make your own saltaway

Re: NITRIC ACID ,Durbans , desalting of outboard motors

I say again, water is the solvent for salt. That other stuff you see in salt water motors is not salt, it is corroded aluminum and crud. Acids and stuff like detergents may have some value in removing various crud. Corroded aluminum is aluminum oxide----they make sandpaper and grinding wheels out of it. When somebody finds a non-destructive solvent for aluminum oxide, let me know. I'll market it and we'll both become millionaires.

BTW, I made that offer to my brother, who is a chemical engineer for the US gov't with all the resources of our tax dollars. That was 40 years ago, and he still hasn't come up with a magic potion.

Re: NITRIC ACID ,Durbans , desalting of outboard motors

After my 13 years in water treatment/acid cleaning of cooling systems and boilers, the factors to consider are: types of deposits, type of acid, strength/concentration of acid solution, temperature of acid(high temp greatly increases acid activity), length of time of acid circulation, neutralization of acid with a base/caustic after acid cleaning, and importantly is that the acid solution should always be circulated during procedure(pump or air hose can be used)....looks like you're having some good results, but be careful acid cleaning machined threads, since it can weaken them.....good luck!....
