No alarm

I have a '94 Merc 175 XRi on a Skeeter boat. When I bought the boat last March, the alarm would sound every time I turned the ignition on. The alarm hasn't sounded for a couple months, but the light on the dash still blinks when I turn the ignition on.

Does anyone know if the alarm went bad, can I fix/buy a new one?? I really don't want to go without it!

Thanks

Re: No alarm

The actual warning horn is probably under your dash somewhere. I would check the connections to that and see if you are getting power to it.

If you get power but no sound, your warning horn is probably bad. This is not likely the problem.

Next, I would check the wires coming from your warning module on the engine.

1 blue
1 blue/white
1 white
1 green
1 purple
1 tan

I think this is the right number of wires/colors

The tan wire goes to the warning horn from the module. There is also a purple wire that goes to the warning horn. Not sure if it comes from the module though. It is the hot lead (power).

Check all your connections and wires. If they are good. Your module is probably bad. About $200 for a new one.

Good luck.

Re: No alarm

Thanks Michaelbr1!

I'll check all the wires. Do you know what the warning horn looks like? It is definitely under the dash because that's where the sound came from when it was working. There are a lot of modules and whatnot under the dash. :)

Re: No alarm

The horn itself should be a small round thing with mounting bracket and a tan wire and purple wire going to it.

The warning module will be on the engine. Probably the port side with the white, blue, & blue/white wires coming out of the top of it.

If you can get a good Merc manual ($25 - $30) it will have all the wiring diagrams in it as well as tons of other helpful info for working/maintaining your engine.

Re: No alarm

the piezoelectric horns on mercs failed and failed a lot. test the horn first.it can be located in the control box or anywhere near the key switch

Re: No alarm

Thanks again for all your help.

I looked at the motor thoroughly and I think I found the warning module. Only the purple wire had juice, the rest did not have any power going through the line.

I looked at a friend's Mariner, and learned that the horn is located inside the control box/key switch area as rodbolt said. I think the horn is bad as I'm still getting the light to illuminate on the dash when the key turns on.

I will tear apart the control box to inspect that horn. It has to be the problem...
