Snowmobiles have had battreyless EFI for more than a decade. It is a great technology. That's all I can add.

I hope it makes it down to the small engines but I don`t think its too likely. The DI outboards we have now are way behind other DI engines. The batteryless efi engines in sleds are not true DI, they are transfer port injected . The big changes we need to see in the outboards now is DET or knock sensers and water cooled crank cases . With a good Det senser set up and active timing/fuel delivery it is all buy imposable to blow up a 2 stroke.

Battery EFI may be ok for sleds and other small engines but those of us who need to start an outboard, run bilge pumps, live wells, stereos, one, two, or three locators, GPS, running lights, electric trolling motors and charge one, two, or three batteries cannot hardly get by without an alternator of rather high output so outboard technoligy is not behind. Besides, smaller Evinrude E-tecs can be rope started without a battery and will run without one.

Re: no battery efi?

already there... my merc 4 stroke EFI doesn't need a battery to run. Mine has electric start, (and also has a rope) but they also make just a rope start version. As I understand it, the first pull, charges a capacitor, and gets a reading from the sensors... on second pull, fuel is delivered by the EFI computer.
Stator provides the juice to run the EFI after that.

Having both rope and electric seemed important to me... I wouldn't want to be stranded b/c of a deceased battery.
