Re: No Compression on 3 cylinders 140hp Mercruiser

Hi cc lancer,

There is no deterioration that I can see between the two cylinders. And I couldn't feel any ridges around the top of the cylinders either. Just some carbon and gunk that can be cleaned up.

Barracuda, do you know how many hours are on the engine ? If you know it has a ton of hours, it makes sense to do a complete rebuild. If the hours are low or you're not sure, and the pistons and cylinder walls look good, I would have the head reworked. Then put it back on (with new head gasket) and repeat the tests. If all checks out and you are getting good compression, I suggest running it and go from there.

I will take that advice waterone1. The cylinders actually look really good. I will take the head down and have it reworked, retest, and go from there. Thanks again for the advice and help.

Sorry to hear of your delema. looks like you have discovered the problem though and are on the right track. Good that you caught this now and can have the boat ready for the summer. nothing like getting ready for a weekend boating adventure and finding what you did. Good job of checking things out.

Now you know why we call a boat, "A big hole in the water to pour money"!
