Re: no drive

Well, First, If one of my engines will not start relaible and run perfectly on muffs in the driveway I don't expect it to be any better at the launch ramp so why would I take it? That's just looking for "drama"

Now: Failure to idle well can have many causes. First thing to checK is the compression ratio. These engines will start and run with one dead cylinder.

The next thing to check is the ignition for a reliable spark. If that is OK, then you must check the idle speed. It must be about 1000 RPM in neutral but the real number is 700-750 in forward gear in the water. Anything else is just guessing. Carbs must be set correctly for a reliable idle. Follow the sticky on synching timing and carbs.

Check the shift rods where they join just below the transom clamps. If the pin has fallen out, you will get no shifting at all.

Re: no drive

ok I checked the pin it must be there When I shift it, the shift rod going down through thengine to the lower end moves up and down as it should. if I put it in gear not running I can feel a little drag on the prop but the shift rod does go up and down to shift. So now I guess I have to remove the lower unit, Besides removing the bolt on the bottom what else do I need to know ? Thanks.......JIM
