How far off of spec did you lower it? It will lean the mixture out some and you may have an issue with is the fuel level needs to be above weir that lets fuel into the accelerator pump. If you stab the gas and the accelerator pump gets a good discharge and doesn't stumble you're ok, just check the plugs aren't too lean.
I did the same on my 3.0 with a mercarb as two of the four plugs were always black. Lowering the float made it idle very smooth and the plugs looked perfect but I ended up with an off idle stumble and a tendency to diesel after long runs pulling skiers or a tube. Went away after I upped the float level.
Also might be worth verifying the choke opens consistently. Had black plugs, tore the carb down, cracked the float and tore the accelerator pump during tear down spent $50 replacing, talking to the parts guy at the marina he casually mentions to check the choke. Put carb back together start it and choke doesn't open...adjusted the choke element to so lean it never closed provided years of trouble free operation. Wish I had spent two more minutes diagnosing.
