i am working on my dads 72, 85hp johnson. I didn't have any fire so I started following the TSing guide in the Clymers. I got 12v to the Amp with key on, but only 9.0v during start. Book says check starter if not 9.5v. I decided to take the starter load out of the picture. i disconnected the batt/solenoid wire from the starter and used another batt to turn over the starter. Now have 12v on term 8 during start...still no fire. Then found the black and white wire had a bad splice in it, fixed splice and now had spark on #2 & #4. Pulled Flywheel, cleaned
and checked gap on both sets of points. Put everything back together... had fire on all plugs! Took a few minutes to connect gas and water... hit key...NO FIRE!? Pulled the flywheel and rechecked... all looks good. Put back together... no fire. Could I have a bad/ intermittant ingition switch? What would yall check next?

Re: no /intermittant fire

Take the ignition switch out of the circuit, and try starting it.

Just be ready to kill the motor , by choking it.
