no key start

Hi

I have just purchased a 1990 35hp mercury motor but do not have a key for the ignition, it is a 3 position, off, run, start, push to choke ignition on console. I have tried to jump start at starter and engine will turn over fine but no start or spark at plugs. Does the key activate some switch or relay that needs activating before it will start?

I have tried new gas, hotstart and it will not fire. I'll be taking to get key soon but just want to hear it run with muffs.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Jim

Re: no key start

Get a key, if you only want to test the engine you can disconnect the black/yellow wire at the switch box and it should run, just remember the only way to kill the engine will be to either choke it out or plug the wire back in

Re: no key start

Thank you for the responses JB and Laddie, I guess I might as well drag the boat to a dealer and get a set of keys, they say there are about 15 differant ones and we will just have to try until one works. Bet I'll write the key number down and keep the spare handy.

Thanks again

Re: no key start

i only had ONE key for mine and lost it ...i drilled my switch on a merc 850
i took the control off the boat to have the the key switch facing down while drilling up the switch.... it worked ..
and guess what... i found the key not even 10 min after i started the motor
it was under a seat....

ok ok no comment...
its an option not the best one but it is an option

Re: no key start

Well, that is not as bad as getting to my deer lease and having to drill out key tumbler to a classic 1976 Airstream trailer. " $400" lock if you can find one!!!, but luck would have I found a place that could replace tumbler only, $40. Now I just leave my classic Sliverstreak trailer unlocked as windows or doors, locks are not to be found. Locks just keep honest people out anyway!!!.

Thanks

Jim
