No oil alarm / light

I've had a "no oil alarm / light" come on a few times after making a long run down the lake then slowing for a no wake zone. Problem is my 1996 Johnson 112 SPL does not have a oil reservoir or pump, it's strickly pre-mix. The owners manual and repair manual give info just for this alarm on oil injected models only, not this particular engine. Could this just be a shorted wire somewhere? Any ideas ?<br /><br />Thanks in advance for any help.

The System Check gauge needs to be replaced. Ghost problems usually occur there.

Is there a way to check the System Check gauge? I really don't like to just replace parts unless I know they are bad. There are already enough parts replacers working at so called repair shops.

no good way to test the gauge but I would trace all the wiring and look inside all the connectors for corrosion and the harness for chaffing. if none are found odds are its the tach.

The tach has been coming and going lately. It will work fine then drop to zero. I did'nt think it had anything to do with the System Check gauges. So you think this could be a bad connection causing both the tach and System Check problems or would a bad tach be causing the problem with the System Check gauges?

beats me your the one looking at it. I do know that the early system check units were flaky.<br /> does yours have the system check tach or a system check 2" gauge?<br /> if your dropping ign due to a bad ground or connection the system will self test when it comes back, a self test will illuminate the lamps then give an alarm, a real alarm will sound the horn 10 seconds and simultaneously illuminate the lamp that coresponds to the alarm trigger.<br /> its a 5V system so you have to have a horn driver or a 2" system check gauge or the system check tach. the wiring for OMS/VRO is under the hood and capped off. you may be fighting more than one problem.

I do have a system check tach. There has been no correlation between the tach dropping out and the “no oil alarm light”. All the lights on the system check do not come on when the problem occurs, just the “no oil alarm light and buzzer” like I’m out of oil. The system check works properly when starting the engine. I’ll start looking for loose connections. Thanks for the info.

look at the 4 wire plug that is capped off under the engine connector cover. its got a purple,black,gray and tan wire. remove the cap and inspect for corrosion.<br /> sea horse can tell ya what color wire to clip at the tach to eliminate the no and low oil discretes. if it does it with the two wire clipped you will know its a tach. actually instead of clipping them you can undo the connector block and just remove the two pins from the connector.

First make sure that your System Check is wired correctly. Turn the key to ON with the motor NOT running and ground out the tan water temp wire (engine harness side) from either cylinder head. The HOT light should illuminate and there will not be any horn sounds. If any other light comes on, then your wiring needs to be fixed.
