Hi all!
I'm new to this forum stuff so I hope this comes out right.
I have a 1986 35hp Merc and am having the same problem as a couple of others on this site. I have water leaking from the area just to the right of the top plug. Info on this site suggests this is an area where the overheat sensor goes. I have nothing there! No hole, no sensor, nothing. It does sort of look like someone put a plate of some sort there, but I'm not really sure about that. If I understand correctly, the hole for the sensor does not go all the way through, but people have suggested to the other poster that replacing the jacket gasket would solve the problem. That sort of confuses me a little because I don't understand how water could come out of it, (the hole for the sensor), if it doesn't go all the way through?
The engine runs fine and pees a good stream that is not too hot to the touch, but I know the impeller went bad and the motor was overheated at one time. I guess my question is: Do I need to investigate further, and will this leak be a problem in the future if I just let it leak? I only run in fresh water, so corrosion won't be a big issue like it would in salt water.
