No Power to motor

We just bought a 1989 Javelin with a 150HP Johnson. Ok, so we hooked the motor up to one of those boot things you put on it with the hose, fired it up in the back yard and it ran great. Turned it off and started it again - ran great. We load up, go to the lake (only a mile away), back it into the water, hit the key - nothing. We have no power trim, no motor. The batteries are all charged (there are 3) and everything else on the boat works fine - lights, live wells, trolling motor, all of it. Jumped the starter straight from the battery and it spins but does not engage flywheel. Replaced the inline fuse. We have cleaned all the battery connections, cleaned all the connections to the starter and solenoid. Nothing. Any ideas?

What kind of shape are the batteries in? Did you swap out batteries and try? Just curious maybe battery crapped out on you, assuming the trim and starter are connected to same battery like mine is.

It sounds like the "first time out blues" also. Several years back my pop got a deal on an old 1972 Tom Boy, we called the "peapod" because of it's ugly green color. after buffing the hull out and replacing the carpet and such we took it to Guntersville Lake for the maiden voyage. It had an old Johnson 50hp on it, stout little motor too. It would start and idle great on the muffs. Well on the maiden voyage we put her in the water and first turn of the key poof the starter burns out. So maybe it's just bad luck.

Mike

One...there is a smaller red wire on the solenoid terminal that the battery connects to, did you make sure that was clean also? This feeds the system 12volts.

Did you swap batteries?

Checked batteries and swapped. They work fine on anything BUT the motor and trim. Checked the red wire on the solenoid. Clean. We have a button on the front with the trolling motor controls for the trim, too. When you engage it, you heare a clicking sound from the relay box, but still no trim. Nothing from the key. Keep those great ideas coming, guys. This is a sweet boat that is WAAAY too dry sitting in the driveway!

You might want to get a testor and start at the battery and go to every connection going to the battery and find out where the power stops. good luck
