i am having problems starting my 1997 force 40 with the key switch, i have replaced both the key switch and the solenoid. i have 12v going to the solenoid but not to the starter when i turn the key, i have made sure the red/yellow wire that also runs to the solenoid has contunity back to they key switch. i can jump the solenoid with the key in the on postion and the motor will start and run fine. the nuetrual saftey swith also seems to be working fine. any sugestions would help.

Howdy, D.hunter,

Welcome to iboats. :)

Sure sounds like a failed solenoid to me. I do take it that the 12v going to the solenoid is going to the small terminal rather than the large terminal from the battery.

There are two good ways to find out if the solenoid is dead: 1. Jumper the small terminal of the solenoid to the large terminal (which is directly connected to the battery positive terminal) but make sure the solenoid is properly grounded. If the starter kicks in then the solenoid is good. 2. Take a resistance reading of the solenoid coil, one meter probe to the small terminal of the solenoid and the other probe to ground (casing of the solenoid). There should be a resistance reading between these two points. If there is no resistance, then the solenoid coil is open and needs to be replaced.
