Hi all,

I have a 88 Mercruiser Alfaone 5.0 with a Quicksilver controller . I noticed that while shifting from forwards to reverse the engine would die. OK, I was told that this is the cable wearing out causing the micro switch to kill motor. OK, I was trying to show the boat to someone, while putting in the water she would not go into reverse. Then I pulled her out and while on trailer (NOT RUNNING) I could grab the bottom cable (on motor mounted end) and pull into reverse. But not by the shifter end. My question is, did the cable finally give up? Or could it be something else. I was trying to sell her but, I will probably just keep her until I work all the bugs out. Can anyone shed some light on this problem please?? Also if it is the cable, what product here on Iboats would be the right replacement, there are a few to choose from. And thank you for whatever you may have for me.

OK update on that cable. I ordered the part got here right away $106 but, this was the OLD style and the bell housing was fitted with the new style $55ish. No problem, I should be able to return and reorder, never opened any plastic. After taking the lower end unit (L.E.U.) off, the cable assembly works great but probably still bad due to the dieing while shifting from one to the other gears. Now if having the (L.E.U.) off and manually shifting into forward, it goes into gear. But when shifting into reverse nothing but clicking both directions of spinning the prop. Did I blow out reverse in just one trip or is there something I should be looking at? I am really stuck here guys and very frustrated. Can anyone help here? This is a brand-new out drive, with a new SS prop, gaskets, bellows and now shift cable, I really was hoping to get her in the water again. Way too much money to let her sit in the back yard.
