no spark.....1968 sportsman120

hi my name is dave.....i have a 1968 sportsman120 with the 120 hp motor inboard/outboard.....i have no spark.....i have replaced the coil, cap, rotor, condenser.......the coild seems to be getting power but it is not going through to the cap.....i have replaced the new coil with another new coil thinking i bought a bad coil....but still no spark.......i am lost......any ideas.....thanks

have you observed the points opening and closing while cranking the engine?
did it have spark before?

yes the points are opening.........with no spark there.......

Tell us what wires and colors u have connected to coil.Ive also had bad condensers right out the box.

to the positive side there is a red wire and a red and white strip wire.....to the negative side there is a green wire and a brown wire.......thanks

Are they also closing? If they don't close completely and open, you will not get spark.

yes they are opening and closing.....will that keep me from getting spark from the coil also.......i just bought this boat and the previous person replaced the cap rotor resistor and points.....i will recheck the gap on the points.......but there was no spark there either.......thanks dave

once you know the distributor is in fact turning, you can rotate the engine to points closed, and then use a pen or screwdriver to just flick the point arm open and it each time you open the points, that should collapse the field and a spark should be released from the secondary winding of the coil.
Need 9V+ at the + post of the coil (reference good ground or batt neg), and need a complete removal of continuity when the points open (the tachometer can cause issue there if faulty - not a bad idea to try with the grey tach wire unhooked)

Which is it? Doesn't matter if the previous owner replaced them, you have the problem now. Have you replaced the points since it won't start.

We aren't there to look at things like you are, if you don't give us accurate answers to our questions, don't expect our answers to help much.

howard......yes the distributor is turning.......i am going to buy a voltage tester tomarrow.......and also going to just replace the points and condenser......thanks for all the fast responses and info......i will see what happens tomarrow,........thanks dave

still no spark.....i replaced the points with new ones.....replaced condenser......points are opening and closing.....still no spark......sorry it took so long to get back here.....thanks dave
