No spark 2.3l omc

Hi there need some help please
I have an 89 2.3l omc and having a no sparks issue replace the points and condenser tested the voltage at the coil getting 5v but when I remove the positive from the coil and measure the wire get 12v as soon as I connect it back to coil it drops to 5 v any ideas would help

The voltage is resisted before the coil and should read around 8 volts when the engine is running. With the points closed and not running good ignition parts may show 0 volts with the ignition on.
Be sure to only use quality points and condensers from either original OMC parts suppliers or NAPA. The ignition parts from the “big box” auto stores are trash and unreliable.

I’m missing something should there not be 12v at the pos side of the coil at start

did you set the points with a dwell meter?

check your connections, you most likely have a bad connection. Start at the battery, work your way up to the helm cleaning and verifying every connection.

points during cranking get 12 volts thru the starter, however only 8-10 volts when running (ballast resistor wire)
