The flywheel has to come off to check out the magneto. Could be as simple as dirty points or as serious as needing coils, wires, points and condensers. You need a flywheel puller to get it off and a torque wrench to properly put it back on. And a service manual to learn what you are doing.

If you have no spark on both plugs the first suspect would be the kill switch, you have 2 wires running from under the flywheel to a push button. You need to disconect these 2 wires and make sure they do not touch each other or any part of the engine then test for spark again, if you still don't have a spark you will have to pull the flywheel as F R explained. The good news is that the magneto ignition on your motor is very simple to trouble shoot and repair.
Do the kill switch test and get back to us, if you do have to look futher you will get step by step help.

hey guys i disconnected the kill switch , no deal . rechecked for spark and found i do have fire on one plug . so i pulled flywheel , points look thin . i cleaned & set gap to .20 at top of ramp . put it back together still no fire ! on the one plugwire . that is about the extent of my knowledge . can you tell me how to check the coils , capacitors , and points ?or anything else that could be the problem on my pullstart evinrude .

Look at the coils and examine them for cracks in their insulation.

Fortunately, new ones are cheap.

Condensors are rarely a problem.

You did do the gapping right, right? Set to open .020" maximum?

No trouble! Sounds like you set them right. Not long ago someone here set them to .020" without turning the crankshaft at all. Just have to make sure. ;)

If they're the '68 coils they must be toast. Pinkish or reddish sort of insulation? Those cracked really bad over time. Black or green insulation are the more common newer ones, although there are others. The NAPA/Iboats/(various online dealers) aftermarket coil 18-5181 is very good. I like it even better than the OEM one. Price is < $20 each usually.

Good idea on the points. They're cheap and easy. Swap the condensors if you suspect them and see if your spark swaps.

Flywheel nut torque is 40-45 ft/lbs.
