Re: No spark 76' 85hp Johnson

I guess the timer base is faulty. the weird thing is that he just bought the motor last month and checked it for spark and everything was good. He did not do anything to the motor except for clean the carb. and he checked it again after he cleaned the carb and it had spark. I am going to cut the sheild off of the wires for the timer base tomorrow and see if any of the wires are faulty. Another thing that baffles me is the fact that the ohms out of the both sensors were equal. I am going to get a DVA and test bot of the sensors next week.

well its been narrowed down to a bad sensor the only problem is that it reads out as being good on the testers. Oh ya and a new trigger pack it $400:(

The engine must crank over at least 300 rpm inorder for the stator under the flywheel to energize the powerpack (ignition) properly. If the engine is cranking over slow, the spark will be weak, erratic, or non existent.

Test spark with the spark plugs removed, and with a known good fully charged battery.

The battery seems fine and cranks over good. I am going to give it a good charge and give it one more try. I have had the plugs out ever since I did the compression test. The good news is that I was able to fit the boat into the garaged just in time because we have had 20" of snow in the past 3 days. I'll give it another try joe and well see what happens.

The timer base on that motor is adjustable. You'll need a special tool for determining the proper gap, but they're cheap (under $30). The tool is just a spacer that slides over the crank shaft and you adjust the sensors until they touch the spacer. You'll have to crack the epoxy over the adjustment screws, but I've recovered more than a few timer bases by properly adjusting them.

Re: No spark 76' 85hp Johnson

Well i spent all morning in the shop working on this motor. I messed around with the sensors and now i got spark on all cylinders. I read the directions in the CDI electronics e-book and shimmed it a little closer and smeared some grease on the sensors. I put the old powerpack on and that worked just fine too. After i got that all buttoned up I tried to start it with no luck. I tinkered around with the carb for a while and noticed that there was water in the gas. I emptied the fuel in the carb into a cup and saw that there was quite a bit of water in the fuel. so now im giving the carb a good clean and using a separate gas tank with good gas in it.
