no spark advance

96 gm 350 tb 5 engine recently rebuilt has anti knock sensor after rebuild I am unable to get any spark advance I set at 8 deg btdc following the MERC procedure When testing the timing at 3500rpm I still have 8-10 deg Yes I made sure It is well grounded Engine starts and runs ok but no advance I am told that If the module fails It wil fail completely Any Ideas ????????

You have to take it back out of base timing mode for the advance to work.

Did you shut the engine off before you disconnected the timing lead? If not, ground it again and start the engine, Verify timing at 8?. Shut off engine.
Then recheck and see if the advance works.
If not, yes the module can just loose advance mode. Be sure to check any connectors for corrosion.
