Johnson 18hp Sea Horse with complete change out of Coils-points and condenser- plug wires ohm out good. The is not even a hint of spark
kill switch was bypassed ot illimnate that prob-then reconnected. Plug wires have not been changed.
Fly wheel was spun by hand and with recoil starter rope.
PS- I've spent an hour checking every thread and searching for info beyond the basic "no Spark" threads and there is didn't seem to be anyting.

Re: No spark after rebuild

The old coils were 50 years old and were cracked and ruined. (see attached pics).
I used CDI coils (183-4477) and ignition kit (18-5006) both from iBoats.
The plug wires and connectors are original but ohmed out at 7.5 ohms each.
I will pull the entire mess again and reinstall plug wires and connectors.
I guess after all the parts, I expected at least some spark.
I respect your input and your time.
Thanks, Greg

Re: No spark after rebuild

I have seen breaker point assy's with a protective coating on the contacts from various manufacturers. I always spray a little electrical cleaner on the contacts, and scrape then with a fingernail before assembly, and this seems to remove any film, or preservative that could cause the points to arc, or not have continuity.

Hope this helps, Jimmy

Re: No spark after rebuild

If the plug wires are even moderately old they can arc through right where they're clamped to the bottom of the mag plate. Especially after they've been disturbed. I'd suggest replacing both of them. Ohms check won't tell you anything about the insulation. Good luck!

Re: No spark after rebuild

Thanks guys for the insight. The plugs did not have any spark prior to rebuild. I will change the plug wires and inspect the points for film.
More after this is complete.
I am working two jobs until Oct 16th so it will have to happen on a Saturday afternoon. I did find a few posts just like mine and have new hope about getting to the bottom of this malfunction. This is a sweet motor and I hate to give up.

Regards, Greg
