I recently replaced the flywheel on this 1991 capri because the magnets fell apart and jammed the flywheel up, the stator seems a little scuffed up but looked alright. After replacing the flywheel I got the boat to fire up. It will start for a while then die and won't start easily for some time after that. I went to check the spark on all 3 spark plugs and only the very bottom plug had spark. I changed the spark plugs to make sure they weren't the issue and even the cables. I got the top two to fire when I switched the wires on the CD board to the spot that was sparking on the bottom plug and both spots that previously didn't spark sparked just fine.. I'm wondering if I have a faulty trigger? And maybe a bad stator too.. Just wondering if anyone has ever dealt with this or knows how to fix it. Thank you in advance. This boat has come a long way but still needs a bunch of work.

I meant switch box instead of CD box, so #3 post on the switchbox is the only post that produces a spark.

To see if I understand, you have spark on all three when all three are tied to the third output position on the switch box.
Then all three coils are working and coils are not the problem. Indicates to me a bad switch box. Check the inputs to the switch box?
cdi electronics has a great ignition troubleshooting guide at http://www.cdielectronics.com/support/

Yes that's correct, I am going to clean up the grounds on the switch box and see what happens, I'll keep you posted thank you.

I do not currently have a dva tester. I believe the trigger is bad but I am not positive. Would a bad stator have anything to do with not firing?

You say it's a 91 L-drive.
They used Mercury's ignition system.
A no spark on 1/2 cyl is usually the stator.

The wires are the plug in style.
Sometimes they burn under the rubber , check for bad spots

It was a bad trigger, I found it out after I did an Ohm test and 2 leads read 0, now I need to time the bad boy, any idea on what the factory calls for degrees when timing a 90hp force? I dont have a manual and cant find any info online. Thanks man
