Need help, I have no spark on a 1968 Evinrude 100hp, i have replaced the voltage regulator, stator, wiring harness on the motor side. Had it running the other day, went to tighten the negative post on the battery and hit the pos with the wrench. Will not start after that. I'm getting spark out of the pulse transformer but not to the plugs. I'm about to loose it! Thanks

Will spark jump a gap of 3/8", yes or no?---If yes then look at / test the rotor and distributor cap.

no it will not jump the gap. I get spark out of the pulse pack with a test light but no spark out of the plug wires.

The test light " spark " is not good enough.----This is going to be expensive.

Sounds like may have damaged sensor under flywheel...the wire unscrews if I remember correctly

Deleted, same info as racerone posted at the same time

You said you are getting spark out of the pulse transformer (coil). That says to me that the sensor is working.

if I put a test light into the pulse transformer, it will flash when I crank the motor, So to me I'm getting spark up to that point, just NOTHING coming out of the distibtor cap to the plugs, it was running until I hit the POS and NEG post together with a wrench.

Post #1 says you are getting spark out of the pulse transformer.-----So answer this.-----Does that spark from the pulse transformer jump a gap of 3/8" , yes or no ?

Are you saying you are making the small bulb test at the pulse pack output / transformer input?

I can't see where shorting the battery terminals would have anything t do with it anyway

It would matter, but I don't think it is possible to put it on wrong. But there is the old saying "All things are possible". As for myself, I've never tried to do it wrong.

I'm thinking you need to begin at the beginning. That is, check to see if you have 12V at the pulse pack input (red wire) when cranking. If not, work your way back through the circuit. Vacuum switch first, then from the key switch, etc.

EDIT: Oh yeah, the voltage suppressor also, if it still has one.

Thanks, my vacuum switch is not hooked up, the owner before me cut the wires off of it, I had it running 2 or 3 times, but now nothing

Then, once you have determined that you have 12V input to the pulse pack, pull the flywheel and distributor cap and clean everything. Actually, this is a normal maintenance item. There is a silver wire spring on the crankshaft that must be cleaned and re-lubed. Failure to do this results in the silver spring wearing and metal dust getting all over everything. Or even wearing in two and shorting out the sensor terminal.

FYI, the silver spring is an anti-reverse cutout. It keeps the motor from running backwards (yes, they can run backwards)

That doesn't exempt you from at least checking the voltage. guessing doesn't get it.
