I inherited a Johnson 2hp model 2r74E. I would assume this is a 1974 motor? I can't get spark. Under the flywheel looks a little corrodied. Where do I start. I tried to take the flywheel off, but I do not have a flywheel puller, where do I get one? Is there a way to get it off without one?

any help would be appreciated.

You can get a harmonic balancer puller, used to pull the flywheel off, at most any auto parts store. It will most likely use 1/4" - 20 bolts that thread into the flywheel, but I'm not totally sure about that for a 2 hp. My 3 HP, 6 hp , and 40 hp all use 1/4-20 bolts.
Instructions are in the "Top Secret" file at the top of this forum. If you take it off and things look like a mess, I would recommend replacing the points, condensers, and coils all at once (hint: one side at a time, so you can get it back together) and get it over with. You won't have to do it again for years.

THanks for the advice. I got the flywheel off and things look good. How do I test the coils and condenser?

What I would do is clean and regap the points, put the flywheel back on, and see if I had spark then. If still no spark, then I'd replace everything and be done with it.

Don't forget to rid the inside of the flywheel of rust and the stator contact points as well. That was preventing my 78 60hp from sparking :)

If your coils are cracked or discoloured they are difinately bad. File, clean and set the points then check spark again. There is also a jumper wire from the armature plate to the engine block. Make sure it has good contact and is not corroded. The jumper grounds the magneto to the block. Without it you get no spark.
