I am considering just going with the sierra version part # 18-5887 if I dont have to chnage the wires or stator.

Anybody have first hand experience with this and know the difference between the Sierra vs CDI powerpacks?

I cant find any information on the Sierra powerpack, as far as what wires and stator assembly needed to accompany it.

The OIS needs the inductive plug wires, no mater the brand of PP. You need to test that stator. The Optical Ignition System is very sensitive to electrical interference. Temp sensor wires need to be clear of plug wires also.

The CDI parts are better and less $ than Sierra, IMO.

I did not see that burnt quadrant on the stator. Looks bad. I am thinking of just dropping the hammer and replacing it all with the CDI setup. Sounds like the best system on the market. This engine was born with ignition problems according to CDI.

Your PP might be fine, optical sensor is ok. Try new stator & wires first.

Re: No spark on starboard side of engine 1993 175 looper

I decided to call Evinrude today, not thinking they could actually help me but low and behold they were. I gave the rep my serial number from the engine to see if he could identify it properly. This was an issue from the start since the tag was ripped off that held the identification # making it hard to identify parts for the engine, etc. Winds up being that its not a 175, the cover is just a 175 cover dangit. Its a 150hp engine. Could explain why the powerhead is bad, if it was the wrong one installed by the slep before me.

Yeah but Im hoping it will save me me on gas expenses, I got to look at the bright side of it. It was fast as heck the day I had it out running good so I am happy with it at 150hp.

I bought a new stator and inductive Gray spark plug wires as specified by CDI today. Its raing over here in NY but im going to test out the powerpack now anyway, if its bad Ill be placing another order shortly for one of those suckers.

Im almost there.......

There isn't a lot of difference between the 150 and 175.
The factory service manual covers both models. The 150 puts out plenty of power for me. Nice knowing what you have though.

The Magneto wound up being bad, a broken wire was grounding it out, it was melted in several places and the spark plug cables where the wrong ones for the new powerpack. I bought both and she fires up perfect now.

The alarm is going off though causing the engine to go into S.L.O.W mode after I am going for a while then slow down. If I turn her off and restart the alarm goes off and she goes full steam ahead. I installed two new temperture sensors that run to two new water temperature guages on my dash so I can monitor each head individually. They are not getting above 120 degrees on each side so I dont believe she is overheating.

Do I need the sensors connected to run this engine properly?
