1986 OMC Cobra 2.5 Liter 4 cylinder
It will not start.
Has been setting for 5 years. I pulled it out of 'mothballs'. Drained the gas tank, put on a new fuel pump, new battery, new thermostat, changed the oil. I have plenty of gas to the carb. Pulled the hot wire from the center of the coil and held it close to a bolt on the engine and no spark. I put a new coil on and still no spark.

Re: No spark out of coil

if you pulled the wire out of the coil, and laid it near a bolt, it won,t spark, try leaving the wire in the coil, un plug the other end, going to plugs, and try it.

Do you have 12 volts on the small wires on the coil when ignition is on?

Re: No spark out of coil

when i touch the leads to either the positive or negative terminals with one lead, then touch the block, the volts go to 11.96 when i turn on the key to the accessory position (just prior to the start position).
i am confused though. when i check continuity on any of the spark plug wires, including the wire to the distributor i show there is none....on any wire.

Do you have points or electronic ignition? If you use the procedure like the posting from russm313 futher down the forum on the same page you may find your problem.

Re: No spark out of coil

i have points.
doing more checking i find that if i put one lead of the meter on the end of the wire that comes from the coil to the distributer, touch the other end to the block and turn the key on i get 12 volts. so i show voltage. does this mean i do not have a good ground? if so can i just run another 'jumper' from the negative coil wire to a ground?
i will check out the other post also. thanks

papakazoo,
You'd Better go back to School for a Refresher Course in Engines 101 .....
It's the Points, When they Close, The coil goes to Ground,+ FIRES......

You're going to look pretty funny, trying to ground out that coil 8000 time per Minute with your Jumper Wire.................
