No spark

I am not getting any spark on my aq151b. I have new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, stator thing inside the distributor, capacitor and coil. The wire to from the coil to the cap read 12 volts but I am getting zero spark. The battery is reading 12 volts and is cranking the engine over just fine. I did change the timing belt but I checked the marks on the pulleys multiple times.

The only thing I can think of is the cap is not contacting the rotor to give off the spark, if you have any ideas please let me know. I have rotated the motor with the cap off and the distributor shaft does spin.

Also the alternator is seized up, I am working on trying to get it spinning freely but not yet.

What is this part..."stator thing inside the distributor"...

Are there points? or some aftermarket triggering module?

Re: No spark

Re: No spark

ok I will let you know. I think I have it working now but I would have to have the motor running to know that lol.

Re: No spark

I have 12 volts from the coil with the key in the running position but only about 5-6 when cranking. I thought it was supposed to be the other way around. I have the purple wire hooked to the + side of the coil, is this correct?

Re: No spark

Check your battery and the battery connections. If the voltage is dropping that much, then I would guess the engine is turning really slow too.. What does the battery itself read before cranking, and during cranking? That is the baseline for any other voltage checks.

One other point. Where did you have the meter test leads, if both were on the coil, you tested wrong. The negative test lead needs to go to ground, not the negative terminal of the coil.

Re: No spark

It was ground i know - on te coil is not ground. The battery stays at around 12-12.5 volts while cranking.

Did you check? They always drop lower than that when cranking, unless you have the spark plugs out.

Re: No spark

One thing though, since I am new to this type of point ignition I did not use a feeler gauge to gap the points. I am going to re gap it when i have time. Do you know the reccomended gap at the widest most part of the cam?

Re: No spark

Found my answer in the manual, 0.40 mm for the points.

Re: No spark

Gap is only the preliminary setting. You need to confirm the dwell is at 62 or 63? for best starting, and then you set the timing. Not timing then dwell. Changing the dwell will change the timing.

And when you are asked a question about what the voltage is, don't assume and just guess at an answer, it's hard enough to troubleshoot a problem over the internet without being fed wrong information.

Re: No spark

I replaced my battery and both battery cables. I also got a new bolt for the ground wire and now I have spark. I still can't get it to start, it cranks over very fast now. I could have sworn it kicked over once but I am really not sure, it sounded like it but didn't sustain it.

I can smell fuel from the carbs and hear them sucking in air. Like I said before I never set the gap on the points so I am going to set that tomorrow and see what happens. I might also see if I can get my friend to help me set the dwell since I don't know how to do it.

Re: No spark

This might be a dumb question, but I have never owned a boat with an out drive before. Does it need to be lowered to start or just in neutral?

Re: No spark

Lower the drive.. Some models say they can be run at idle with drive up, but it's good insurance not to do that. It puts the U joints at a bad angle and tears them up
