I had no spark on my 1997 70hp evinrude. I read bob-vt issuu link. it was very helpful. i disconnected black wire from power pack the one on bolt. i tried to start motor and it tried to start so i put black wire back on and it fired right up. two or three times i tried it with no problem. should i be concerned about a bad part somewhere or will it do this again. thanks for the help

concerned but i wouldnt worry too much now you now how to bypass it.
An intemittent problem is very hard to track down so you can end up replacing parts for no reason.
Sounds like either bad powerpack or a short in kill circuit

should i try to figure out where the problem is or just run it. today was the first time i tried to start it this year.i noticed the shifter bound up when i put it in gear. it wasnt running when i shifted it. had it running on muffs only today. does the rectifier have anything to do with it and what does it do

Rectifier changes the stators ac into dc for charging the battery.
It also runs the tach to show rpm if you have one.
I wouldnt bother finding it out unless you want to spend cash.
I dont know what you mean about shifter binding up

tried to put throttle in forward position and it would not move much it would move in reverse. it eventually went forward. i know alot of people say you shouldnt use throttle/shifter when motor is not running.

They are right, that would of being the problem as the gears need to mesh before they go into their rightful slots, what was probably happening was that they were not in their position to mesh and pulling the leave was trying to force it in. With the motor running its constantly getting out in a postion to mesh, A gear selection should be made firmly and quickly, a slow change wears the edge of the gears where they slot into the other
