breaf history on "57 Gale 25hp.

sitting for 25yrs.
started and ran well on the lake first tim out.
put new water pump on.
stopped running well (sneezing), squeeze primer bulb helped for a short time.
replaced bad fuel pump(holes in diaphram) with brand new pump.
still sneezing, can't get rpm up.
rebuilt carb, put new plug wires on.
won't start. got spark to lower cylinder, intermittent spark top cylinder.
it tried to start at first, but just sneezed.

It's a blind hole where you put spark plug wires in the coils. I pushed and wiggled while putting them in. How do you know if you got it right?

Gas is getting thru. Top plug wet, bottom looks good.

Also, I lost my carb diagram, idle jets interchange, one has large knob, one has small knob. Large is on top, small on bottom. These are the only adjustment aren't they? No small screw hidden somewhere to adjust idle?

BTW, isn't if funny how if you put one or both of the butterfly valves in wrong, none of the linkage seems to line up? Ha ha.

I'm glad it didn't take too long for this shade tree mechanic to figure that out. Flipped them both around and BANG, all linkage works perfectly.

the wire "screws" into the coils. The stud in the coil has threads to help keep the wire on. The easier way is to pull the coil out and you can pull the coil wire through the hole and attach it to the coil. Then remount the coil. I am sure you intermittent spark has to do with a bad connection. There should also be rubber boots that go through the wire and go around the coil.

About those coils: Did you put new ones in? If not, why not? Had somebody else already done it? There isn't a '57 OMC alive with good original coils.

Sneezing at slow idle is a sign of running lean. You might have a blown seal, admitting air. Even so, you have to get decent ignition if you ever want that motor to run right.

Good advice so far. Time to inspect the coil/points/condensors under the flywheel for good connections. Read the carburetor thread in the FAQ forum, it will explain initial settings for your outboard.

when i took off the flywheel, it looked to be in excellent condition. The shaft had a little scarring just under the threads. Key was perfect.

It appearred that one of the coils (front) was replaced, it looked cleaner. The coil on the rear looked brown and dirty.

I figured it ran great the first time I took it out, they must work.

The motor sneezed a lot before I rebuilt the carb. It only sneezed once when I tried to star it after the carb rebuild, however, it wouldn't start. I remember the carb thread. I just wanted to make sure i was adjusting the right things. I didn't see any other screw adjustments on the carb other than the low and high idle adjustments.

Also, on the idle adjustments. You have the inner part and the sheath that goes around it. After adjustments are made, do you tighten the outer part down to a snug fit so you can still adjust the idles?

I will get 2 new coils and points.

I called laings and they were closed today.
I called iboats and they said they didn't have parts for Gale.

I'm trying to order coils and points, maybe condenser too. Do you all know the parts #?
Maybe they can order it by that.
