Recently had my 1994 200 OMC serviced and the tech said that it had no thermostats in it.
The guy I bought it from last June had run alot in salt water and he said that that is probably the reason. He took them out cause they corrode and stick from salt. and maybe he was not a regular flusher.
Any way he put new ones in and I run mostly brackish water and flush every time.
What are the pros and cons of running with no Thermostats?

Thanks

Re: No Thermostats?

Obviously the engine runs colder and as such is not as efficient and will not necessarily reach its designed running temp. I cant see any plus in doing it. I run in salt and dont flush 3 years no problems with sticky thermostat.

Mnaufacturers are not in the habit of installing parts just for grins. They were designed into and installed into that engine for a reason.

The maker of the engine knows better than the last owner. Put them in!

And flush the motor before you install it with one of the saltbuster compounds(Sorry, can't thing of the name of it right now). Do a search on saltwater motors and that should help..

The flush product you want is called Salt Away.

Many of these OMC motors will not idle worth a damn unless they get to operating temp. - even in Florida in the summer.

Plus, 90% of wear occurs while the engine is warming up. Thermos help it warm up quicker and the parts tolerances go to design fit.

Re: No Thermostats?

Most engines have a optimum heat range for peak performance usually +/- 10 degrees. Your motor won't run as good as could with out the t-stats. Even if it 'sounds' or 'feels' as good without them, your mileage and durability will suffer.
