I live in sc and I have a boat and outboard motor registered in NC that has been in my yard for 3 years. My grandpa purchased it and didn't receive a title or bill of sale.:confused: I have no idea who the boat belongs to. Any ideas on how i can get a title and register it.

Its a parts boat now. Their is a small chance you can get a tittle for it, Call your local DMV and see what they say.

I'd guess it belongs to your grandfather?

I believe most states have provisions for obtaining legal rights to abandoned boats, do some searching online and see if you can find anything. If that doesn't answer your questions look up the state agency that deals with boat registration and talk to them. Unfortunately all states are different in regards to registering/titling boats.

In this case, you could honestly go through the abandoned boat process to get ownership and a title. Every state's laws are different in that regard.

If it might be worth some money, it might be worth paying a local lawyer a couple bucks to handle the process, but you may be able to do it on your own. Just follow each step carefully, even if it doesn't make sense, like mailing your grandfather a registered letter if you must. You have to approach it as if a tenant (grandpa) moved out leaving his boat on your property. If there are NC registration numbers on it, you will probably find you have to deal with NC too.
